Part of the large folk music revival, Peter, Paul, and Mary became American folk legends in the 1960’s, and their fame and music still lives today. Mary Travers, Peter Yarrow, and Paul Stookey started the band in 1962 in the midst of the civil rights movement. Their somewhat political and socially-aware songs became popular quickly during that time. You might remember their hit cover of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin in the Wind,” probably the song they’re most famous for. They’re most recent album, “In These Times,” came out in 2003.

$40, $15 (lawn)

Special guest Jackie Greene opens for the amazing Los Lobos, a 25 year old quintet from Los Angeles, California. Combining folk, Tex-Mex, and country music with rock, folk, and the blues, Los Lobos is continually stretching the bounds of fusion rock and confounds anyone who attempts to classify their sound. They just released “Live at the Fillmore” in 2005 on the Hollywood label. They consistently get good reviews from the press.

Editorial Review:

Album Description:
This triple-Grammy winning group of consummate musicians and songwriters out of East L.A. began their career interpreting Mexican folk music and went on to be a globally renowned purvayor of a diverse and adventurous repertoire of roots-flavored masterpieces. Drawing from rock, country, blues, folk, R&B, Americana, and traditional Spanish and Latin American idioms, Los Lobos continually pushed the boundaries of their sound, while remaining magnificently gritty and graceful throughout.

Buddy Guy, The Robert Cray Band

The Robert Cray Band

Ravinia Pavilion
200 Ravinia Park Road
$45, $15 (lawn)

According to www.ravinia.org, Blues legend and Grammy winner Buddy Guy has influenced superstars like Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix. Along with his raging blues guitar, Buddy Guy’s soulful, sometimes tortured vocals make the music a unique experience. I believe he currently holds the title of “Blues King of Chicago,” just like Muddy Waters did before him.

The bluesy Robert Cray Band opens.

Album Description:
2005 INDUCTEE TO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!

BRAND NEW, EXPANDED EDITION OF BUDDY’S GRAMMY-WINNING, GOLD-CERTIFIED RELEASE!

To celebrate Buddy Guy’s newest and bluest accolade, Silvertone Records is pleased to announce the Expanded Edition of his breakthrough Grammy-winning, gold-certified release, Damn Right, I’ve Got The Blues (Best Contemporary Blues Album). This special edition includes 2 tracks previously unavailable in the U.S. – in fact, formerly released as b-sides in the U.K. The album cover will be true to the original, but beautifully enhanced with a special silver background. As another added bonus, Damn Right, I’ve Got The Blues, Expanded Edition will feature brand new liner notes from none other than Anthony DeCurtis, the Rolling Stone editor and writer at large.

Amazon.com essential recording:
This guest-studded CD relaunched Buddy Guy’s career and set him toward the pinnacle of contemporary blues. Despite turns from Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and others, it’s Guy who burns brightest–and loudest. He delivers roaring, exuberant performances of classic R&B (”Mustang Sally”), old-time blues (”Black Night”), and house rockers (”Where Is the Next One Coming From”). Most poignant, though, is his seven-minute instrumental “Rememberin’ Stevie,” which not only rekindles the fiery spirit of his own youth, but pays sensitive tribute to his late friend and admirer Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is the blueprint for Guy’s current performing style. –Ted Drozdowski
